Nuremberg is located on the River Pegnitz and Rheine Main Donau. As one of Bavaria's biggest draws it is alive with visitors year-round. For centuries, Nuremberg was the undeclared capital of the Holy Roman Empire and the preferred residence of most German kings, who kept their crown jewels here. Rich and stuffed with architectural wonders, it was also a magnet for famous artists, though the most famous of all, Albrecht Dürer, was actually born here. 'Nuremberg shines throughout Germany like a sun among the moon and stars,' gushed Martin Luther.

Sitting on the fringes of the snow-capped Bavarian Alps, multi-layered Munich is a city that revels in its contradictions. It's Germany's most visited destination after Berlin, but it presents two very different faces to the world. The first is that of a modern metropolis, driven by technology and innovation, somewhat characterised by the likes of BMW (whose high-tech HQ is a big visitor attraction) and FC Bayern Munich, the hyper-successful football team whose 21st-century stadium looms on the city outskirts like some gargantuan spacecraft. The second is that of a deeply traditional town, best known for the beer-swilling rumpus of Oktoberfest but defined year-round by dirndl-wearing waitresses, gingerbread architecture and the defiantly German strain of warm hospitality known as Gemütlichkeit, the untranslatable tongue-twister that refers to a supremely cozy state of well-being. Travelers, of course, are drawn like a magnet to the city's fairy tale charm, superb museums and annual Oktoberfest. Munich has sometimes been referred to, by other German, as the "City with Heart".
